Why Am I So Tired All the Time?
By Dr. Stephen Lewis, D.C.
One of the most common questions I hear from patients is:
"Why am I so tired all the time?"
Many people assume that low energy is simply a normal part of getting older. While aging can bring changes to the body, persistent fatigue is often a sign that something deeper deserves attention.
The challenge is that fatigue can have many potential causes. Taking random supplements or following generic health advice may not address the root issue. That's why I encourage a simple approach:
Test. Don't Guess. Get Answers.
Common Causes of Fatigue
Thyroid Imbalances
Your thyroid gland plays a critical role in regulating metabolism and energy production. If you're experiencing fatigue, brain fog, weight gain, or feeling cold, our Thyroid Panel can provide valuable insight into thyroid function and other markers that may influence energy levels. When thyroid function is less than optimal, symptoms may include:
Fatigue
Brain fog
Weight gain
Feeling cold
Dry skin
Hair thinning
Many individuals are surprised to learn that evaluating thyroid health often requires looking beyond a single lab marker.
Nutrient Deficiencies
Your body relies on a variety of vitamins and minerals to convert food into usable energy, support cellular function, and maintain overall health. When key nutrients are lacking, fatigue, poor concentration, reduced stamina, and a general lack of energy can occur.
Some of the most common nutrient deficiencies associated with fatigue include:
Vitamin B12
Vitamin D
Iron
Magnesium
Ensuring adequate intake of these nutrients through a healthy diet and appropriate supplementation may help support optimal energy production and overall wellness. Many individuals choose a comprehensive multivitamin, such as Active Mega Multi, as part of their daily wellness routine to help support their nutritional foundation.
Hormonal Changes
Hormone fluctuations can significantly affect energy levels in both men and women.
Women may experience fatigue associated with:
Perimenopause
Menopause
Estrogen imbalance
Progesterone imbalance
Men may experience changes in energy levels related to declining testosterone production.
Blood Sugar Imbalances
Blood sugar fluctuations are often overlooked as a cause of fatigue.
Common signs may include:
Afternoon energy crashes
Sugar cravings
Irritability when hungry
Difficulty concentrating
When blood sugar is not well regulated, energy levels can rise and fall throughout the day.
Chronic Stress and Poor Sleep
Chronic stress affects multiple systems in the body, including sleep quality, hormone balance, digestion, and recovery.
Many people believe they are sleeping enough hours but still wake up exhausted because the quality of sleep is poor.
Why Guessing Often Doesn't Work
One person may be tired because of a thyroid imbalance. Another may have nutrient deficiencies. Someone else may be struggling with hormone fluctuations or blood sugar issues.
The symptoms may appear similar, but the underlying causes can be very different.
That is why I believe a personalized approach is important. Understanding what may be contributing to fatigue allows you to make more informed decisions about your health.
Looking Beyond the Symptoms
At Green Wisdom Health, my goal is not simply to help people manage fatigue. My goal is to help uncover potential factors that may be contributing to the problem.
Through functional nutrition, wellness education, and laboratory testing, I help individuals better understand what may be affecting their energy, overall wellness, and quality of life.
